What can you see in an Early Pregnancy Scan?

This is dependent upon the date of your pregnancy:

  • At 5 weeks a pregnancy sac and yolk sac may be seen.
  • At 6 weeks an early embryo should be seen and you may also be able to see fetal heart pulsations.
  • At 7 weeks fetal heart activity should be present and you should also be able to differentiate between the fetal head and body.
  • From 8 weeks the outline of your baby is seen more clearly and limb buds may be formed.

If necessary the sonographer may refer you to your GP or local hospital for some blood tests to help determine if your pregnancy is healthy and in the correct location.
